What's the story?

"The Wild Robot: A Heartwarming Tale of Survival, Connection, and Growth"

In DreamWorks Animation's newest release, The Wild Robot follows Rozzum 7134, or "Roz," an intelligent helper robot whose primary purpose is to assist humankind. However, her mission takes an unexpected turn when the cargo plane transporting her crashes on a deserted island, leaving her stranded in a place devoid of human civilization.

The animation style

The animation style is captivating, immersing viewers in a beautifully crafted forest teeming with wildlife. The unique hand-painted style used to bring this world to life gives the film a distinct feeling. The voice casts such as Lupita Nyong’o delivering a robot-like voice as Roz. Pedro Pascal lends his voice to Fink.

Unexpected journey of Roz

Initially, Roz’s programming drives her to find tasks to fulfill, but adapting to the island’s untamed environment soon proves to be a challenge. She encounters various animals and, through trial and error, learns to communicate with them. Roz’s journey takes a heartfelt twist when she accidentally destroys a nest, leaving a single egg unharmed. The egg hatches into a baby goose, Brightbill, and Roz becomes an unlikely mother to the orphaned gosling.

self-exploration and the power of adaptation.

As Roz tries to raise Brightbill, the story delves into themes of self-exploration and the power of adaptation. Despite her programmed limitations, Roz is determined to care for her newfound “child,” even enlisting the help of other animals, like a fox named Fink. Roz’s attempts to teach Brightbill how to eat, swim, and fly are both heartwarming and humorous, especially as she learns alongside him. For young audiences, Roz’s struggle to navigate an unfamiliar world resonates with themes of resilience. Meanwhile, older viewers, particularly parents, may find themselves relating to her challenges in raising Brightbill without any prior knowledge of motherhood.

Finding Family and identity

The film also explores the question of family and belonging. Brightbill, cared for by a robot rather than his own kind, struggles with his identity, much like Roz struggles to redefine her role. As winter approaches and migration season looms, Roz must prepare Brightbill to join his flock, even if it means letting go. The themes of perseverance, pushing boundaries to achieve your goals, and evolving beyond one’s programming are woven throughout the story, highlighting that sometimes, survival means becoming more than what we were "designed" to be.

Reflecting on society

Beyond its touching narrative, The Wild Robot doesn’t shy away from depicting nature's harsh realities, balancing the robot's programmed kindness with the raw unpredictability of the wild. The story also encourages audiences to reflect on human society, presenting a world where different beings come together despite their differences.

A visual and emotional masterpiece

With stunning visuals, heartfelt storytelling, and themes that resonate with both children and adults, The Wild Robot stands out as one of the best animations of 2024. It’s a beautiful story about motherhood, survival, adapting, evolving, and discovering our own capacity. I rate nine out of ten.

My Screen Times Score: 9/10
