Review
"A Quiet Place: Day One" takes us to the chaotic beginning of the alien invasion in New York for the first time. At its core is Samira, played by Lupita Nyong'o, a cancer patient who spends her days in a hospital with her faithful cat, Frodo. She takes Frodo wherever she goes. One day, Rueben, a nurse, takes Samira and other patients to a show in the city. The story doesn't waste time, instantly immersing us in the terror of the extraterrestrial invasion.
While the film revolves around an alien invasion, its primary focus is the emotional journey of its characters. Lupita Nyong'o's portrayal of Samira is fascinating, capturing her effort to find reasons to live and defend her beloved cat. There's a reason she won the Oscar. Her character is different as she has already accepted her fate.
The film perfectly illustrates human perseverance and the need for connection in the midst of catastrophic catastrophe, as well as the pursuit of happiness and reasons to live. Samira's relationship with a law student named Eric (Joseph Quinn) gives depth to the plot by highlighting their touching connection. There is a chemistry between them. Given the potentially fatal repercussions of spoken communication, the cast's performances, which rely mainly on facial expressions and eye movements, are outstanding.
Frodo, the cat steals the show and has a lot of screen time, contradicting traditional cats behavior by being unusually silent throughout, adding to the film's tension. I am also a cat lover. My cat would continually hiss and make noises, particularly when he was hungry. But, shockingly, Frodo remained silent throughout the film. I'll just presume that Frodo is clever and built differently.
The film’s visuals are stunning, depicting New York City in ruins with aliens terrorizing the streets, buildings collapsing, cars crashing, and ashes covering the landscape. The depiction of military response and human civilization's desperate reactions to the crisis are both realistic and harrowing.
Rated PG-13, the film avoids gory kills and relies on jump scares and the tension of silence. The concept of staying quiet to avoid the creatures, combined with effective sound effects, creates a nerve-wracking atmosphere. The familiar alien creatures are shown in ways that heighten their menacing presence. There are no r rated gory kills here. The sound effects play a major part in this movie. Such noises can be life and death. We have all seen the creatures in the past two previous movie. The camera work of showing the creatures heightens the scary vibe of the creatures.
Despite its strengths, the film does not add anything new to the franchise. The alien species' origins remain unknown, but their characteristics—being blind and hunting by sound—have been widely established in prior films. You can still appreciate this film even if you haven't seen the first two films of this franchise. This lack of new information might disappoint fans looking for deeper lore.
Overall, "A Quiet Place: Day One" impresses with its emotional depth and dramatic atmosphere, but it falls short of expanding the franchise's mythology.
