REVIEW
"Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" (2024) takes place many years after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes," long after the death of Caesar. Human civilization has collapsed, leaving buildings in ruins, overtaken by nature. Apes now dominate the world, forming tribes, clans, and even kingdoms. Humans, no longer at the top of the food chain, have lost the ability to speak due to a virus.
Wes Ball’s direction brings a fresh vision to the franchise, balancing action with thoughtful storytelling. The world-building is superb, with stunning visual effects and CGI that create a believable post-apocalyptic landscape. The action sequences are exciting, and the sound design complements the visual storytelling, adding to the immersive experience. The depiction of the apes, their interactions, and their battles are thrilling and visually impressive. The facial expressions of the apes are particularly well-done, conveying a range of emotions effectively.
The movie runs over two hours, offering a slow-burn narrative that's both compelling and straightforward. The story follows Noa, a new hero ape on a quest to rescue his clan after Proximus Caesar, the king of the apes, kidnaps them, burns down his village, and kills his father. The narrative is compelling, focusing on Noa's journey of self-discovery and redemption. His character is the one you can't help but root for, much like Caesar. Along the way, he meets Raka, an orangutan whose clan was also destroyed by Proximus Caesar. Raka, who is following the way of Caesar, believes in compassion for all, making him a likable character. Mae, a human played by Freya Allan, later joins them on their quest.Starting as strangers, the trio gradually learns to trust one another, forming a bond that is heartwarming to watch. The plot is engaging, with a villain whose motives are well-explained, adding depth to the story. The film also delves into the legacy of Caesar, exploring how his ideals influence the new generation of apes. The ending is satisfying and leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. Overall, the story is solid and well-executed.
