Review
"The First Omen" (2024) is a prequel to the original 1976 "The Omen" movie. It's about the exploration of how the Antichrist, Damien, was born. The story is set in Rome in the 1970s and offers a unique approach to religious horror films. It's okay if you haven't watched "The Omen" (1976) yet. You can watch it after you watch this film.
Margaret Daino, portrayed by Nell Tiger Free, is an American nun who travels to Italy to become a novitiate at the Vizzardeli Orphanage. She played her character very well, starting as an immature nun, only to uncover a sinister conspiracy within the orphanage. This gradual unveiling of the plot maintains a creepy and unsettling tone throughout the film.
Although the movie is about religious horror, the real villains of the story are humans, not the devil. The motivations behind the characters' actions are deeply disturbing and add to the film's horror. The film is 2 hours long despite its slow build-up and some sequences that seem unrelated to the core story, the movie effectively uses graphic imagery and a tense atmosphere to evoke fear.
The film's cinematography, especially its depiction of Rome's 1970s churches, combined with the demonic and satanic conspiracy elements, is particularly terrifying. The use of score enhances the horror, making the story more serious without relying on comedy elements.
The result is a slow-burn horror film that doesn't rely heavily on gore or jump scares. It effectively uses unsettling tones and images to create a lasting impact on our brains.
