Plot
When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings - never use someone else's deck - they unknowingly unleash an evil entity trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
Review
"Tarot" follows a familiar horror formula involving a group of friends who make a poor decision that unleashes a deadly supernatural force.
While these friends are celebrating a birthday at a rented mansion, they run out of booze and search the house for more. They ignore a warning sign on a door that says "keep out," and enter a room and discover a deck of tarot cards in a wooden case. This act triggers an evil entity to start killing them off one by one.
While the villain's backstory and the combination of tarot and horoscopes to foretell the characters' fates is an interesting concept, the plot follows a predictable path. I feel like there is no chemistry between the friends. The characters will be easily forgotten over time.
The narrative is straightforward doesn't waste any time and moves quickly into the horror elements without much build-up. Although there are multiple kill scenes, they occur off-screen, reducing the impact of the horror. This might not satisfy horror movie fans who want to see gory scenes.
The villain designs are adequately creepy, and most of the action takes place at night, which helps maintain a spooky atmosphere.
"Tarot" relies on jump scares combination with sound effects and comedic elements rather than building tension through a slower, more atmospheric approach. If you are in the mood for a PG-13 horror movie with a decent story involving teenagers, tarot cards, and horoscopes, this film might be a suitable pick.
