Review
A24 continues its trend of delivering unsettling, atmospheric films with their latest release. It's slow-paced thriller centers on Owen and Maddie, two teenagers who feel disconnected from their reality.
The story set in the early 90s and explores themes of loneliness, disconnection, and existential questioning, wrapped in a visually captivating package.
The film feels claustrophobic and suffocating throughout the film. Characters are portrayed with a haunting emptiness and emotional distance. The story unfolds slowly, focusing heavily on character development and emotional depth in the first act. This deliberate pacing might not appeal to everyone.
Visually, the film is a treat. The use of vibrant colors contrasts sharply with the dark, depressive tone of the story, creating a striking and memorable aesthetic. Clever lighting and chilling sound effects add to the suspense, making the audience feel the characters' dread and isolation. The use of tapes to watch "The Pink Opaque" adds a nostalgic touch, grounding the story in its 90s setting.
The film is rich with metaphors about lost connections, loneliness, and the search for identity. The narrative is more emotionally driven than plot-focused, which might not resonate with all viewers. It demands a level of introspection and patience, rewarding those who engage with its deeper meanings.
Personally, I found the film's depressive tone challenging to enjoy. Its emphasis on emotional depth over a traditional narrative structure makes it a unique but polarizing experience. The film is more of a vibe than a story, with its slow burn and heavy themes potentially alienating some viewers.
They take a lot of time building drama in the first act but everything will make sense as the story progress. There is no gore and jump scares. Not everyone will relate to the film and it's characters. Personally this kind of film with a depression tone is not my type and I really didn't enjoy it well. The story is more of a sad drama story than a horror film.
